HABITAT VERSUS DEVELOPMENT:
With so much loss of habitat, the small areas, corridors and stepping stones, provide vital flora DNA diversity, as well as the means for fauna to move to other areas to make territories, and to not interbreed, which leads to limited dna, facilitating annihilation by disease etc.
Movement of fauna facilitates the relocation and establishment of flora also. So when someone says that it’s just a few trees, that the area is insignificant, they are greatly mistaken, and hugely ignorant of ecology and biodiversity etc.

How we build our homes and construct our infrastructure has to change, and fast. It is for the benefit of all mankind that this change takes place; that what remains of our indigenous native habitat and wildlife is preserved. To do otherwise is to prove that humans are not only the most selfish of creations, but also the most foolish, as the price will ultimately be levied against mankind. *
Despite knowing Australia is bush fire prone since colonisation, the authorities have done little to change construction and planning methods to accommodate this reality. Their strategy has been and still is to demonise the bush and encourage its removal, without any regard to the long term consequences – i.e. loss of habitat, ‘aussie’ native species, and ironically, increased fire frequency and ferocity. In other words, the strategy to prevent is actually part of the problem. **
Strategies to assist upgrading and building to the fire conditions would save emotional and financial loss to individuals, as well as the financial burden of replacement of infrastructure due to fire and other disasters which will increase in severity and frequency if climate change is not addressed. It would save lives. It would save habitat, and therefore Australia’s unique flora and fauna. It would retain beautiful natural areas for human wellbeing. It would create industry and jobs.
[*The current BAL ratings strategy is not saving the environment, as developers, builders and individuals clear to reduce the BAL ratings. Even meeting BAL ratings doesn't prevent the illegal clearing post build (public & private land) either, as there is little to no education, or notification regards the importance or status of native vegetation etc. and the demand for firewood seems more important than protecting 'aussie' ecology.
** The organisers of this website do not advocate disregarding clearing directives by the authorities to make your home firesafe. It advocates change in approach by the authorities in planning and building strategies to reduce the need to destroy the environment.]
